Warren didn't slow until he was miles from the census building and the enemies it held.
And still, Warren maintained a steady gallop, heading south towards Dalhurst. Excitement and nerves churned in his gut, make the ride less than pleasant.
The Amiran countryside was more or less a waste land, with few trees outside the dark pine forests. Small streams trickled into stagnant ponds, dotted about the plains were boulders and rocky hills.
But Warren was used to this terrain. He had faint memories of playing with his mother around Pinecliff, before Eden was born, and before his father...
He blinked hard, ignoring the memories of his parents. He didn't know his father anymore, and he suspected he never really had. Warren had never known him as a man that would exile his own queen, just to stay in power over Amira.
After multiple hours of riding, a dark pine forest loomed far on the horizon. He would be lucky to reach it before nightfall, and he had a feeling that those dark woods weren't the kind you wanted to be traveling in at night.
Warren set up camp at the back of a shallow cave, and awaited morning, when he would hopefully, finally find his mother's family.
He dreamed of his mother and the time he had spent with her, and of her and Eden, and of how much it had pained him when she had disappeared, although back then, he had not known how or why. He vividly remembered when he had found out that his father had banished her, and when he discovered why, Warren’s disgust with his father was overwhelming.
But none of that really mattered to him right then. He just wanted to find his mother.
